Cheryl Collins, Director

Goodnow House State Historic Site has been accepted as a partner in the Kansas African American History Trail.  The Riley County Historical Museum operates the Goodnow House State Historic Site through a partnership between the Kansas State Historical Society, Riley County, and the Riley County Historical Society.

In 2016 the Kansas African American Museum (KAAM) in Wichita received an Institute of Museum and Library Services Grant to develop the Kansas African American History Trail.  The grant allowed the KAAM to identify important Kansas African American history related sites, research their stories, and develop a web site outlining ways to explore this history.

In addition to the Goodnow House State Historic Site, Trail partner sites include: Fort Riley Calvary Museum and Buffalo Soldier site; Osawatomie Kansas John Brown sites; Nicodemus Township; Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Buffalo Soldier site; Fort Scott Gordon Parks sites and Buffalo Soldier site; Wichita Calvary Baptist Church and The African-American Museum; Fort Leavenworth’s Richard Allen Museum and Buffalo Soldier site; Lawrence’s Grover Barn, Clinton Lake, Langston Hughes Walking Trail, Spencer Library and Bailey Hall; George Washington Carver Minneapolis sites; Kansas City Negro Baseball League Museum; and the Ritchie House, and Brown V. Topeka National Historic Site.  KAAM continues to conduct research and is in the process of establishing the Kansas African American History Trail web site.

Goodnow House State Historic Site has received signage noting its designation.  The Riley County Historical Museum is working on a driving tour of important Riley County African American history locations that will coordinate with the Trail.
