BACKGROUND

The purpose of the Lincoln W. and Dorothy I. Deihl Endowed Fund is to support programs that improve the quality of life in the City of Manhattan, Kansas and the surrounding area. The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation will consider funding projects from local organizations that involve quality of life initiatives in the following areas:

Arts and Humanities

Basic Human Needs (education, food, health, & shelter)

Children and Youth

Projects showing the ability to have a major community impact requiring $10,000 or more per year are recommended. Multi-year proposals, maximum of three years, for the same project will be accepted.

 

DISCUSSION

Homeless youth face more significant and substantial health disparities that their peers with more stable housing. Riley County Health Department is a submitting a proposal to support the provision of health services to youth and families enrolled in the Unified School District (USD) 383 Families in Transition (FIT) Program and other vulnerable youth. The FIT Program  includes 375 students living in shared housing, transitional housing, substandard housing, migratory children, and other unaccompanied minors. Full funding will support the hiring of one part-time (.5 FTE) Certified Nurse Aide to assist a RCHD registered nurse to provide prevention and health services to USD 383 FIT students and families and other vulnerable youth identified by district staff. Spanish interpreter servicess and transportation vouchers are also included.  Applications are due October 31, 2017

 

FISCAL IMPACT

Potential to provide $104,967.81 over three years in funding from the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation (Deihl Fund) to support the provision of prevention and health services to USD 383 students and families in the FIT programs and other vulnerable USD 383 youth.

 

RECOMMENDATION(S)

Move to approve the Riley County Health Department grant application and sign the letter of support for funding from the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, Deihl Fund.
